I really didn't know where to post this - so I apologize if this is the wrong area of the forums for a thread like this....
OK - I live in Oregon. Lately on the news there have been stories of strange things happening, and the strange things are said to be happening because of the recent solar activity (solar storms, etc.)...
So one of these strange things has been.... standing brooms.
At first I thought.... "slow news day"... and sort of dismissed the stories.
But then they wouldn't quit.
So, finally, I got my broom out and tried it: I placed my broom on the floor and let go.
And it stayed! It didn't fall over. And... sort of like when you hold magnets close together, I could feel a sort of pulling...
Here's the photo of my broom standing up all by itself:
I just tried it and mine stood for about 5 seconds and then fell over. These kinds of POS brooms with squared off synthetic bristles would probably stand anytime, anywhere, but nobody ever tried it. Newer ones would probably be easier to stand. I can stand a penny on edge, too.
Ours is still standing... kids wanted to see it when they got home from school. So it's a little past midnight now, and it's been standing since about 3:30 this afternoon... and it's an old broom, very worn, with very soft bristles... and it's not flat on the bottom, it's bumpy.
It's the weirdest thing. I have family in other states who have tried it (including Dallas, TX) and it won't work for them really, either. Maybe a few minutes but then down they go. I am in Oregon and it's all over the local news here. The aurora borealis have been very active and have been seen much further south than they normally can be seen. It's all so... I dunno.. fun! And kinda mysterious and spooky, too.
A neighbor of ours even has one of those old corn husk type brooms with the wooden handles doing it, and it has a worn-away curved bottom.
I did look it up online and found a bunch of people dismissing the whole thing... but man - I wish they could come here and experience this themselves before they do. It's really odd.
Being highly skeptical i figured i'd give it a try to prove it must be a local phenomenon in the op's area..

My broom no longer stands up as long.... I tried it yesterday... I'm going to try it again in a week and see what happens.
This other neighbor lady has this old broom that has a curved bottom... it's worn away at the edges... and she had hers standing up in her driveway for a long time.
Our youngest son's school had about a hundred brooms all standing up at the same time for several hours in their cafeteria. lol I'm trying to see if anyone got photos!
Sure as heck isn't working for me here in New Jersey! Maybe b/c the broom bristles are tilted to one side....
