When it comes to pirates a 1970 ear Coast Guard cutter would be more than sufficient. As for Iran, I'm not looking forward to resolving the surface vessels vs, surface to surface cruise missile debate.

It is an interesting thought... long range over-the-horizon cruise missiles are looking for a radar image, they aren't being vectored to the target by an illuminator like many SAMs. The radar on a missile has a lot of constraints (size, power) so it is quite possible the stealth design of this warship has a huge advantage vs. attacking ssms in how well a missile can see and lock on to it.

Even if it can't be completely invisible to an incoming cruise missile, it probably has a much easier time of looking less attractive than countermeasures it deploys vs. a conventional ship would.

Between stealth profile, electronic countermeasures, the ESSMs it'll carry, and the 57s with the programmed burst one could argue a Zumwalt is less of a floating target than any other surface ship. I still have problems seeing the need for the land attack role though.

Geez, if it was that simple please explain why one little 'ol 1970's Coast Guard cutter hasn't taken care of the pirates off of Somalia?
