There may be a window wherein the cognitive abilities of humans can integrate with digital technology to produce individuals that are smarter overall than either AI or human. That lifeform can then proceed to change to a purely digital form through suitable neural mapping, and thereafter evolve itself.
This is at least 500-1000 yrs away...but I do admit, if we continue like we are, this will happen at some point. We are long overdue for the next big Tech 'leap forward', some new discovery, likely found by accident, will change everything overnight imo.
I find it hard to believe. Whenever I operate a computer, it has to be babied almost every step of the way. Robots wouldn't even know how to replace the human race, if they tried, they would fail miserably.

Well, thats because we,the general public are not privy to the really good computer tech.

Stephen Hawkins also predicted AI will surpass human intelligence within 100 years in his ten predictions he made before he died. He added “We’ll just have to hope their goals are aligned with ours”.
personally, my prediction is CRISPR humans fight Robots/AI in 100 years or less.
