In a world-first breakthrough, University of New South Wales (UNSW) medical researchers have used stem cells cultured on a simple contact lens to restore sight to sufferers of blinding corneal disease.
Sight was significantly improved within weeks of the procedure, which is simple, inexpensive and requires a minimal hospital stay.

Stem cells have tremendous potential. I saw a couple other studies where stem cells were used to:

- heal a little German boy's skull which was partially missing after an accident. Skull was regrown using stem cells over a calcium lattice, and bone regrew with no abnormalities.

- people with severe nerve tissue damage - not paralyzed, but in constant pain - report much less pain after treatment with stem cells injected into their nerve tissue

the list goes on. Too bad W chose to throw us back to the stone ages first. Thank God he's out of office.

Adult stem cells seem to have more promise and fewer adverse side effects. Embryonic stem cell research was allowed but just did not have federal funding.
