I'm planning on going to Seattle, and I may either drive or go up there on an Amtrak train. I wanted to know, what public transportation in Seattle is like. I hear you can get around pretty well, without a car.

Yep. Search King County Metro and Sound Transit on Google and you get their websites. You can see route maps and system maps as well. I would say Seattle and the general vicinity are pretty well connected by bus.

I see you're coming from CA. I am from CA and I lived in the Seattle area for 3 years. Outside of New York, it was the best public transit I'd ever encountered. You can totally get by without a car.

Public transportation in most of the US is pretty substandard by global comparison. Anybody who considers transit in Seattle to be anywhere near "the best public transit I'd ever encountered" hasn't encountered much worthwhile public transportation.

Correct, in Seattle you can *get around*. But you won't do it in any kind of timely manner and you won't go far.

Come check out most other U.S. cities if you find Seattle's tranist disappointing. You will be truly mortified.

True that. The bar is pretty low. The U.S. decided to stop trying a long time ago.

Even just a couple of hours to the South, Seattle's little brother Portland, has better public transportation.

just because it has trains does not mean it's better. I think the transit tunnel is one of the most innovative transit ideas in the U.S.

transit is pretty good on the whole, you can get anywhere you want to go... but 8 times out of 10 it will take longer than it should.

What a bunch of whiners.

Taking public transit, unless there's MASSIVE public investment, will ALWAYS take longer.

I think Seattle does pretty darn well given its funding for public transit. Take a look at the transit system map and you'll probably be shocked just how GOOD our system is.

A few houses I've been shopping for have had 1-2 bus rides into downtown Seattle that took an hour or so. From the north end. Mill Creek. That's pretty damn good if you ask me.

And yes, I've been to Japan, and yes, it does not compare, but then again, they invest heavily in their system.

Seriously, just go to King Co. Metro's website and try the trip planner, try the system maps, and check out the times.

OF COURSE it won't be as convenient as a car, duh! That's true anywhere.
