Hi There,

Some Seattle-based companies I'm aware of that offer the opportunity to specialize (depending on your exact field) are:

Microsoft
Amazon
F5 Networks
Expedia

I know there are others, but those are 4 where I know individuals who are specializing in some specific area.

Really, because I am currently interviewing with Amazon and as a Database Architect which is a pretty specialized skillset, the job description that Amazon is interviewing for is very generic at best.

My current employer has over 200,000 employees and as a rule silo specialists do not go far, in fact to move ahead most technical people need to expand skills laterally, because the need to understand the entire business is a crucial requirement.

So to sum it up, there are "some" younger companies that might allow the first in people to specialize, but as those companies mature, generalists are preferred.
