Hi there,

We're moving back to the PNW (use to live in Portland), but aren't use to Seattle.

My husband's going to be working on the SR99 underground job (so near the water front). Not traveling at rush hours.

Where would you live if you wanted to spend 1200/mo ish and not commute more than 45 minutes one way?

We love: less dense populations, country, water. We're not city people really, and have no kids to consider.

We would LOVE a floating home, is that way too $$ for us?

Would so appreciate any advice. We're making the move REAL soon. Thx

When I first moved to Seattle I rented a floating home because I thought it would be great to live on Lake Union. I paid $25.00 per month. The downside was it was next to impossible to find a parking spot. My house would bounce up and down when a boat went by. And, in the winter the floor was terribly, terribly cold, it made my feet ache. I suppose now you could add that they are terribly, terribly expensive to live in, but they weren't then. I ended up renting an apartment off Broadway on Capital Hill where the rent was a very expensive $85.00 per month.
Actually, anyplace in the immediate suburbs are 45 minites or less away but you may have difficulty finding a decent apartment for $1200 now.
I would suggest renting a temporary place first and while here, spend some leasure time looking for a location you feel you will be more comfortable living in on a more perminent basis.

Floating homes are definitely very expensive with a strong competition of other potential renters.

Why not consider Vashon Island? Otherwise, look towards the Eastside past Issaquah. While north and south of Seattle do have greenery, it's still very suburban.

You could buy a boat and live on the water at Shilshole Bay Marina in Ballard. Houseboats are in huge demand and the city is limiting them so the prices will only go up. I'd look at Issaquah as a reasonable 20 minute commute to the tunnel construction area. You might find a small apartment for that there in the older parts near downtown. It's a quaint older very small city but has newer shopping areas with everything you will need.
