a few more that lately happened to me:

listening to world class classical music in a meadow festival near port townsend followed by a drunken
dungeness crabfest with visiting rasta musicians from Jamaica playing.

joining raucous filipino house party to watch Manny Pacquiao fight.

sitting in hot springs in the middle of the Cascades with a high powered Republican lobbyists (I'm not one)

ripping huge powder bowls at Mount Baker with winter sports extreme athletes.

gorging on BBQ cooked by a dude who just got here from Texas and listening to jamming celtic fiddle played by Irish musicians who just moved here (alcohol was involved again).

I was taken in by the way you name-dropped her, but at heart, she just loves people. She gets away with bashing our quirks because you get the sense that she doesn't care about any of them; that she has love for the same people she's tearing apart. You? Do not come across that way. It may have something to do with the chilly reception that you get.
First, let's spell Lampanelli correctly. Lisa Lampanelli gets away with what she does because 1) she is a woman, 2) she is middle-aged, and 3) she has weight issues. She get a "pass" for those attributes. Plus, let's admit it, she is talented. Empathy or no empathy, no fit white guy could pull off a routine like that.

Next, I used to work with a woman from San Diego who was from a Mexican (yes, Mexican) background. Being kindred Californians, she and I would poke fun at anything we found funny. High on our list was Tonya Harding. One Saturday morning, I was in the office and so was she. She came into my office and said "What's wrong with the people in this company? They're so cold." They were all flat-lining local jerks and, during casual Friday pizza in the pm, you could hear a pin drop. I told her "I don't think it's just this company. It's the Pacific Northwest." Mind you, this was a WOMAN. The stuff she and I said would not fly in that area. In SoCal, it probably would. She brightened my day at work.

Next, you are in Boston. While it's New England, it is often considered an extension the Northeast. Have you been to the "original" North End of Boston? I know it's now yuppified, but there was no namby-pamby restraint in that area. Do not ask anyone in Seattle "What are you?" pretty early on, the way you would in the Northeast. Ethnicity is squelched, not celebrated, and I'm not the only one to notice this. Yes, people go into Italian and Greek restaurants, and then act just like in-laws in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" in their real lives who made their token effort to expand themselves culturally. In fact, to hell with Chicago! Those sticks in the mud on "Greek Wedding" must have been from Seattle!

Lastly, are you an attorney? Your construction of your argument was somewhat convincing.

I would take Boston.

yeah, right before you go ballistic on each other to the point guns are drawn

FWIW, as a Bostonian, I can see what Patanjali is saying about public transportation. The OP said that they want to live outside of the city and commute in, with a family home; once you move off of the beaten path of the T, commuter rail or bus lines, your options do decrease...however, it's usually easy enough to park the car at a T station and ride the T in from somewhere like, say, Wonderland station.

Which is why I said earlier...it just comes down to the home lifestyle you plan to lead, and how you intend to use the city you're at proximity to. It's not inaccurate to say that taking commutes into consideration is important. The public transit system in Boston is fantastic -- if you have ready access to it. I always have, so I've never had to worry about the inconvenience of being on its outlying arms; now that I want to move out of the city proper...I'm moving to Seattle. That's just my .02.
ahh....someone else who hasn't experience the wonderful Seattle public transportation (or lackthereof) Trust me....Boston has it so much better between the T and the buses as well as commuter rail. If you think Boston's public transportation is poor...because you have no access to it....you are in for one helluva rude awakening here in Seattle. Its more sparse and less accessible than Boston. And thats if you live in the city proper....you venture out into the burbs....good luck finding a way to get around without a car. This year major cutbacks were made to commuter buses to already minimal bus routes.

Nah, I'm already aware that it doesn't have extensive public transit...but I'm planning ahead. The main sticking point for me wasn't that I thought Seattle had more public transportation outside of the city, but that I thought the neighborhoods outside of the city offered more of what I was looking for. But I'm going to be on one of the islands, so driving will definitely be a must!

Driving in the suburbs here in Boston, though, is not much different from driving in the city: i.e., extremely crowded, with inadequate roads to support the present population. (Plus, I think the suburbs here are just...ugly.)

Nope, I'm not! But thanks! Just a creature of logic, or so I like to think, anyway.

Seattle ALL THE WAY. Everything is wonderful and fresh-air-filled. Boston is one huge cesspool of factories and industry. Seattle is a new, upbeat, calm, yet fast moving city. The sites are beautiful, the people are amazing, the many landmarks like the Pike Place Market, the Space needle, the Great Seattle Wheel, and the columbia tower only add to the greatness that is Seattle. The mixture of Native American, Modern, and Natural Culture make this city a place like no other. Boston is a stupid has-been. Seattle is modern and fresh, yet natural, and classical. Choose Seattle. Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle! Go, Seattle!
