Kemper Freeman could have done much more with this city and I resent Microsoft tax dodges. I appreciate their positive contributions but there's a lot I don't like. That doesn't mean I am bashing the Eastside. It means I disagree with specific policies and specific corporate behaviors.

I also don't like the "Seattle Process" of talking for. ev. er. about everything and never getting jack done unless one person comes in and co-opts the process and then we get a stadium and transit is set back by 15 years.

But I love this city, I love Seattle and I love where I live. I don't love it because it's perfect. I love the good things and live with the rest.

Yes, there are people who speak derisively about Orting and Issaquah and Bellingham and Ridgefield and the Tri-Cities. They truly think they are better than everyone else in every other neighborhood and can't laugh at themselves.

I've encounter them mostly on the Internet.

Most people I know in real life talk in terms of trade-offs, pros and cons, difficult decisions, and doing what works with what they have. Most people I know in real life have a sense of humor.

I love it when progressive Seattle bourgeous bohemians complain that the Eastside lacks diversity.

Go check out the Eastside for yourselves, you'll see plenty of families of different ethnicity speaking different languages.

What they really mean is that they don't like ordinary squares and families.

In Seattle they lack diversity outside of the bohemians, hipsters, freaks and bums who prefer the "vibrancy" of their own company.

Why do so many people from Seattle and the Eastside bash South sound and Tacoma?

Who is bashing Tacoma? I live on the Eastside and I like Tacoma. I don't know much about living there since my job is based around Seattle and I haven't looked into it - but I love visiting. The glass museum, art museum and fun shops (cupcake shop near the UW Tacoma, I'm talking to you!) in that area are great places to spend the day. I recently found myself in the area of Proctor (love the Pacific Northwest Shop) and enjoyed it. I have a membership to the Point Defiance Zoo and try to go there as often as I can with my kids. There's a long beautiful paved path along the water next to there that is perfect for strolling/scootering.

I came across this thread on Reddit this weekend. Many of the comments are typical of how Bellevue is viewed by Westsiders.

Settle this debate: House in Magnolia vs. Apt in Downtown Bellevue : Seattle

"Downtown Bellevue is pretty much a suburban mall in urban camo. Try crossing the street a few times as a pedestrian to see exactly how urban it is."

"..That said, I guess I'd choose Magnolia to live in. It's kind of far from all the action, but Bellevue is just sterile."

Downtown Bellevue IS a suburban mall in urban camo. That is completely spot on. I'm sorry if one gets butthurt over criticisms about the sterility of the suburbs, but its not exactly a new idea or rocket science that the suburbs ARE sterile.

Now, as for the Magnolia, I do find it a bit ironic to complain about suburban sterility and then go live in Magnolia, which is about a isolated as you can get in Seattle without moving to the northern boundary near Bitter Lake.

That comment is kind of odd- crossing a street in downtown Bellevue or downtown Seattle is not that much different- you still have cars going down the street and have to wait for a "walk" signal before the cars stop so you can cross.

That couldn't be any further from my description if you tried. To start with, just the existence of dense trees makes it unlike the suburbia of most of the rest of America. Standard it is not.
