We used to go to Farrells on Hawthorne Blvd. in So. Cal. Thanks for bringing up those memories.

We just don't have the climate for a real ice cream parlor, the Ben & Jerry's truck on Pine Street has left already for the season.

Oh yes, Ferrell's were all over way back. I remember eating a "zoo" way back in the 70s, Kennewick Washington.

I don't know about the new Farrell's, but Farrell's used to use Thrifty Ice Cream, another California brand - and something transplanted Californians may miss.

Umpqua and Tillamook are good, too, though.

According to Ask.com, Alaska consumes more ice cream per capita than any other state:

I'm a Seattle area native, and remember Farrell's well, along with Shakey's Pizza, Valu-mart, Bardahl oil, Ye Old Spaghetti Factory and many others. While I live near Capital Hill myself and Molly Moons is OK, it;s certainly not worth standing out in the cold to get some.(anymore than it 's worth the wait for an $8 cup of coffee at Starbucks Reserve). These are places for the New Seattle urbanites as places to be seen. Farrell's and YOSF on the other hand were definitely places worth waiting for. For large parties at Farrell's you definitely needed reservations or you just didn't get in. Small walk in groups, (ie after a movie, etc) could wait upwards an hour. But once inside, especially birthday guests, were made to feel as though they were the only person in the world. And yes I remember very well being embarrassed several times by the Gong and the Singing ensemble. I read where Farrell's is considering a possible move up to Portland, (it's birthplace)maybe someday they'll come back to Seattle.

Has anyone tried Full Tilt? There are 4 stores, Ballard, U-District, Columbia City and White Center. I passed the one on Leary but was working and no time to stop.

We would frequent the Farrells at Southland Mall in Hayward... I think one on the selections was the kitchen sink... full of ice cream.

All the kids loved it!

LOL: as we're all marching down memory lane and Farrell's. Me, too, then: I remember where it was in SE Michigan, in the 1970s and early 1980s. It disappeared one day, rather unremarked. We'd head down there and play video games, the thing kids did at that brief moment in history on the technological march. I remember more than a few parties there, too, with the candy and ice cream bit writ large.

That they were in California, and here in WA as-well, is amusing. Probably elsewhere in the U.S., too. And no, I don't know of any confectionary Eastside like that anymore though some of the obscene deserts at various restaurant chains (Chilis and etc.) might roughly suffice. Not the same, I guess. Farrell's had a candy emporium, too, at which all us kids would ponder for hours if left to our devices.
