How common is this? Like, someone in their mid-20's who works full time, never attended UW, doesn't work for UW. Not talking about Ravenna. I mean in the core of the UDistrict.

I used to. What's your question? You have to remember most of the population around there is either supporting the school or attends there. UW has a student body of 30,000 undergrads and 12,000 graduates, that means a LOT of real estate around there is taken up by them! But a few do live nearby and aren't affiliated.

I personally got sick of the 4AM parties, disregard for public property and the bums who live nearby stalking my girlfriends. So I left, and never looked back.

The "U District" covers a lot of ground. It stretches all the way to the freeway, and up toward the Roosevelt District. All kinds of people live there, none of them are UW students, former students or faculty. No parties, no muss, no fuss. What's your concern, OP?

Well it's true ... to have all of them at one point say "some creepy guy followed me almost all the way here" from work/school/wherever. Even my current wife got stalked a couple times, and that's the real impetus why I moved out. It was time to move on.

I was just kidding. Yeah the area can be annoying like much of downtown. Strange, you think for a school as high caliber as uw that they would find a way to keep the crime below average.

University districts all over the US have gradually deteriorated since sometime around the 1970's. In many cities they used to be higher-end shopping areas and nice parts of town, but many of them have gone downhill as drugs, homelessness and crime have seeped in. I don't see how the universities could have any control over homelessness and other problems swirling around the city streets around them. These are issues the city administration needs to tackle.

Well, that's what I was talking about....having the city make sure that the area is clean and protected...not UW (although, having a lot of campus police on patrol at night would also help).

I used to attend seminars offered by UW campus police. They do their best, and they coordinate with city police in the U District. I'm not sure the UW is in a position of influencing city policy in this regard. I think the best they can do is have campus police work with city police, which they are doing.

I guess one reason homeless are attracted to the U District is the possibility of sleeping in the shrubbery on campus and in Ravenna Park. Maybe campus police needs to be beefed up.

I will say, if you think U-District is bad in Seattle, you should walk around my alma mater. Washington University in STL is one of the most dangerous campuses in the country (or it was ranked as such at one point). I would say the homeless were much less of an issue compared to the gangs.
