Just looking for general info. What are they like? Which are better/worse, which are good for middle class? Kent vs Auburn vs Renton vs Federal Way, etc.

Federal Way is the best city out of (Kent, Auburn, Renton). All 4 cities have their good areas and bad areas. Personally, I like Auburn before Kent & Renton. For retail, Renton is better because it has The Landing, IKEA, Fry's and is near Southcenter Mall. Renton is also better when you're traveling (flying) because it's near Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. For traffic, Federal Way is better. The other 3 cities have to contend with horrible traffic issues with an inadequately built SR167 and/or I-405 freeways.

Again, Federal Way is best of choice.

Grew up in Federal Way, Good working class city. Only 15 minutes from the Airport and South Center. Some great neighborhoods, Lots of beautiful beach access. Decent entertainment options for a suburb (Mall, 2 movie theaters, Strip mall sprawl, Theme Park, State parks, etc). Federal Way school district is pretty good, not the best but definitely alot of positives and have people who care for student success. Worst areas are are Pac-Highway and Apartments along 1st Ave. Easy access to Tacoma and surrounding areas. Even the Supermall (Now Outlet Collection) in Auburn is only 5 minutes away from the Federal Way city center. I would say Federal Way is the best followed by Renton, Auburn, then Kent.

I'm the least familiar with Federal Way, so can't comment much on that, other than that the beaches are nice, and it's a little far of a commute to downtown Seattle. I have been caught in bad traffic there, but I can't say it's always like that, or I just got "lucky".
Renton is very convenient in getting to Seattle or Bellevue, and if the freeways are jammed( and they do get that way), surface street options are available. Renton's big, and neighborhoods range from upper middle class/fancy to downtrodden slums. There are lots of parks, and Lake Washington. There's plenty of shopping and restaurants.
Kent has a few more crummy spots, and is a little further to get to Seattle or the eastside, but it's probably got the least expensive housing of those cities.
I'd also throw Burien into the mix. The part of Burien where it borders White Center is not very nice, but the downtown area is fun and charming, and Seahurst, Gregory Heights, and Maplewild are nice area. It's a very quick trip into Seattle, not so much to the eastside.

Depends. It's just that there are more bad area in the southern suburbs than the northern suburbs, but both have nice and bad areas.

Start with the Burien library, it's in that area.

Google Street View drove through about 3 years ago, during the height of the recession, and it shows in the pictures. The place looks a bit better now.
