Am I the only one that thinks we don't have enough signage designating thru traffic/exits etc... on our freeways? I think this is in part the cause of last minute lane switches and confusion when on the road which can result in accidents etc.. Look at the photo below of I-495 (Capital Beltway) in the Washington, DC area. There are numerous "thru" arrow signs and additional duplicate signs right behind that. Compare that to I-405/I-5 interchange photo below that. Do you see what I'm talking about?

Compare signage organization on I-495 in Washington, DC area to I-405 in Seattle area. Talk about lame for Seattle.

WSDOT (Washington), you need to take some lessons from VDOT (Virginia).

No, I think most of the time people know exactly where they're going, what they're doing, and why they're doing it.

I completely agree. We don't have enough signage, and some of the signage we do have is either too late(so you have to quickly move over several lanes of traffic) or it's confusing.

Try driving in New Jersey and you'll quickly appreciate how good the signage is in WA. Most of the problems I've run into are due to construction, either route changes or detours.

The worst thing is that they wait so long to let you know that the right lane must exit, so you have to merge left on short notice. I don't know if it's a lack of budget for signs, poor engineering, or the desire to avoid spoiling the views from the freeway with signs. In my experience with WSDOT poor engineering is the most likely.

I've driven in 44 states, including New Jersey. Their freeway signs are fine....it's those side roads where you can't take a left turn is a hassle.

One change they could make would be to let people know that the feeder collectors to and from I-90 are through lanes so people would realize that they don't have to jump out of those exit only lanes if they are continuing past 90
