Willing to move within an hour or so of Seattle area that offers inexpensive rentals. Closer to $500/mo. Have found some places 2 hrs away. 2br, allows small dogs, hopefully a yard.

I have not seen anything within an hour commute to Seattle below about $700, and that's a small studio.

Is there anywhere in the country where you can get a 2BR for $500/month? In my very low-cost hometown in Ohio, that still only gets you a 1BR.

We just moved here and unfortunately haven't seen any rentals in the price range you're looking at. Unfortunately I think you're going to have to move preeetty far out or adjust your search criteria a little, maybe a studio apartment, or a duplex/townhouse further out from Seattle. Best of luck!

I've heard of quite a few basement apartments Fremont - Ballard area for $600 - $800 (including utilities). You won't find them on CL, as often it is an older couple who rents via 'word-of-mouth' / friends. EZ to network via hanging around older people!

Ta Ta Ta Tacoma aka Ta-Compton...

No, it's not that bad but Tacoma, Lakewood and perhaps Puyallup are the only affordable areas in the entire Puget Sound.. I sure hope you don't have to commute to Seattle for work, good luck with traffic.. Best bet you wake up 2 hours early to make sure you don't spend that time sitting on the freeway doing nothing.

Good luck finding $800 anything in Fremont Ballard anymore.. I cannot even find studios for that price in that area anymore.. Regards from your local corporate apartment companies who are buying up all the property and building their overpriced, cheaply made, thin-walled, tacky and trendy mega apartment complexes all over those areas. In Fremont $800 won't even get you a bachelor apartment anymore.

Yup. A number of the new apartments that have sprung up in Seattle in the past several years look like cheap pieces of junk probably owned by some big California corporation who's probably not familiar with what effect Seattle's climate will on some of these types of buildings over time. Ugly boxes with "trendy" color palettes and "chic" names...

Actually, you would bne surprised to see how many people catch the buses at 2nd and Stewart every day headed for home in Lakewood, Tacoma, Gig Harbor and even Olympia. It's a long way but with many employers subsidizing the bus pass, and devices to read/surf along the way it must not be too bad.
