I am a Canadian thinking of moving to Seattle.

What is the public perception of the neighbourhood Queen Anne.

What are characteristic of Queen Anne.

How does the neighbourhood and the type of people living Queen Anne compare to Mercer Island

Upper or Lower Queen Anne? Lower Queen Anne is more urban with a lot of Amazon workers. Upper Queen Anne has one main street of commerce and is more residential. Both are considered nicer neighborhoods. Upper Queen Anne is slightly safer than lower. Many people who live in upper Queen Anne have lived there for years.

I agree with Northwetter, both upper and lower are very walkable but upper is much quieter. Queen Anne and Mercer island are like different worlds. Mercer Island is very suburban, with multi-million dollar waterfront homes, newer condos and apartments, and older homes but spread out with a small, limited business area. It's positioned nicely to go to Seattle or Bellevue within 10-15 minutes drive but not much to do there unless you have a boat and dock.

Queen Anne: Lower side abuts to the Seattle Center. It is younger, hip, noisier, more stuff there, slightly higher crime, and lots of great public views of Seattle.

The upper side has similarly nice views of the north end of Seattle, and as others mentioned, decidedly more residential, though the one drag is quite nice. Reminds me of one of the residential shopping drags near Victoria, BC. Can't for the life of me remember which one it was though.

If I could afford to, I would buy in upper queen anne.

Mercer Island: Uppity, Stepford Wives-ish, high income, million dollar no-view homes, excellent schools, extremely safe, poor walkability save the central park which is quite cool, and some excellent public park views of Lake Washington. Very small central business district. Centrally located between Bellevue (excellent shopping) and Seattle. If I were working in Seattle and could afford a condo or house on Mercer Island, I would do it.
