KIRO7 is reporting that one of the victims has died.

Another senseless mass shooting, this time at a Christian university.

Another family left paying "the price of freedom", as some of my conservative co-workers refer to these tragedies.

Why is it the innocent and our law enforcement officers are the ones who have to pay "the price"?

I, for one, am starting to seriously question, whether or no,t the price of this particular freedom is worth its true cost.

My prayers go out to the family of the victims.

Why cant colleges do the same thing I know it not a perfect idea but it better than noting.

We've got to enforce the gun laws that are on the books . What good would there be if we pass more laws no one will follow in the first place.

We don't subvert freedom to fear.

Does the threat of mass shootings frighten you? Then examine why these despondent youths continue to exercise their anger and insanity on innocents. Even if we were to follow through on the ludicrous idea of banning all firearms, what, precisely, do you do about the thousands upon thousands of guns that are already out there? Because a person who sets out to kill random victims doesn't give a crap about the law -- he's only concerned with causing pain. And he's going to acquire a weapon that will allow him to do that, legal or not.

Even more to the point, let's say -- thanks to an act of God -- every single gun out there spontaneously melts tomorrow. Do you think the violence stops then? Or, rather, do you think these crazy, but often smart, kids just start visiting the local feed store once a month and buying an inconspicuous bag of fertilizer? Six months later, boom -- a massive car bomb explodes outside a Sounders game... or a preschool. Now, instead of 1 or 5 or 15 dead, you've got a hundred. Recall: this is a free society. And, presumably, it remains a free society (it wouldn't be, but let's say it is) even without guns. So without summoning up some secret police to watch everyone, you're going to have people slip through the cracks and do bad things. And, frankly, I'd rather have them doing bad things with guns than bombs.

Is that unsatisfying? Sure it is. But that's the best we can do. Or is it? You see, there's an alternative yet that reactionary leftists refuse to examine, and that has to do with causality. Why are these things happening? The world is dangerous, and is full of crazy people. But it hasn't always been this way... or has it?

You see, in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, we had the good sense to throw most of these unsettled people in a cage. And we had a powerful concept of personal honor (and of familial shame) that kept those who were borderline largely in check. Today? Today, crazies wander the streets, expected to self-medicate, and nobody cares if they dishonor their family.

Now, we probably can't to anything about the latter, but we sure as hell could rectify the former. Bring back the asylum. Let's stop trying to cure, and start throwing away some keys.

So many mentally deranged people lately. Last week it was the shooter at UC Santa Barbara. This week it's in Seattle University. What is this, are students so bored with their curriculum that they are creating dramas in their heads that lead to them shooting up?

Time to start throwing these ppl back into nuthouses, thats what we used to do with them, and it worked quite well.... than most of them all closed, and now they are among us. Of course reactionary *******s would rather pass useless legislation that doesn't even address the root cause.

PrincessOfTheCape - your idea that if guns disappeared that folks would just create new deadly weapons doesn't pass the sniff test. See - Canada, Germany, the UK, Sweden, Norway, etc etc etc - peer countries that have massive restrictions on firearms.

Guns are the problem precisely because they are so readily available to people who should never have them, and because they are so uniquely created to KILL.

There are likely 10,000x more knives in this country than there are guns, yet we don't see mass stabbings. Fertilizer is available at your local Home Depot, but bombings are so rare as to be artifacts of history.

Mass shootings? Hell, in Seattle alone - a very low-crime city on the whole - I can think of the Jewish Center, Capitol Hill, Café Racer (where my daughter was in a park 2 blocks away when it occurred) and now this in a 24 month span.

Mental illness is absolutely a problem. Until we realize that guns are far and away the easiest tool for the mentally ill to act within the most devastating fashion, we're screwed.

Making bombs requires foresight. Shooting requires nothing but rage, illness, drunkenness, or any other emotional trigger you can define. And it's right at our fingertips, just like the founding fathers wanted... right?

Wilson? *******? seriously, don't you know how offensive that in and of itself is to the community of people who have special needs. Also mostly "nuthouses" were used as institutes to cruelly and inhumanely house people with special needs of some sort or another not necessarily people who have psychological problems.
