So I am coming for a vacation in Seattle for 4 nights and have two options to stay. One is in Old Ballard which is I think where I want to spend most of my time, the other the University District. The thing is the University district place to stay is over $150 cheaper for the 4 nights. If I really want to spend some time in ballard is the university district really far/not going to be as interesting? I am wondering if it is worth the savings.

What place did you find to stay in the U District that's $150 cheaper over the 4 nights, than Ballard? There's a bus that goes out to Ballard from the U, though it's a bit of a long ride.

Do the Ballard place. A month after your holiday, you won't miss the money.

Karch is spot on. U Dist to Ballard is doable, but why would you? You would love Ballard, especially Old Town. Besides the huge amount of top notch music, food and excitement there, an added benefit is being able to bike (or even walk) to Shilshole at Puget Sound to see the sunsets.

It's about 25-30 minutes on the #44 trolleybus between the U District and Old Ballard. Things you might want to see in the U District or nearby:

* University of Washington campus - dates back to the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, Seattle's first world's fair. Visit the UW

* The Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, on the NW corner of the UW campus. From dinosaur skeletons to geology to NW Native American culture and art. http://www.burkemuseum.org/

* The Ave (University Way) - worth a stroll. Lots of inexpensive eateries, most ethnic, coffee shops. University Bookstore. Shiga's.

* Union Bay Natural Area - rent a canoe or rowboat at the Waterfront Activities Center - Canoe & Rowboat Rentals | Recreational Sports Programs

* Across the Montlake Cut: Washington Park Arboretum (designed by the Olmstead Brothers), Foster Island, and Waterfront Trail (all free). Trees and flowering plants from all around the world. Washington Park Arboretum ~ UW Botanic Gardens

* Japanese Garden ($6) in the Aboretum. Originally conceived in 1937, it was completed in 1960. http://www.seattlejapanesegarden.org/

* On the #44 bus route: Wallingford (shops, restaurants, bars), Archie McPhee's (Archie McPhee Seattle Store) of "Nunzilla" toy fame, Woodland Park and Zoo (walk north on Fremont), and Fremont (walk south on Fremont). Also Green Lake (walk north through Woodland Park, not the Zoo).
