Hi, our family moved to Seattle some weeks ago and we have been actively house hunting. It seems we are close to secure a home on Lake Forest Park, which would put our 14 year old son in Shorecrest HS. However, I don't seem to find very reliable reviews on the school (Greatschools.org, Washington State report card and the US News&World School report are all the sources I find), so I wanted to ask for your opinions / experience. Is Shorecrest a new school? It seems there are a lot of economically disadvantaged students and some online reviews have stated a lot of attention from teachers goes to them. It also looks like they didn't meet their Yearly progress goal. Our teenage son loves to study and be challenged academically, he also is a talented musician so we want him to be on an environment where he'll thrive and hopefully get into college. My personal preference would be for him to attend Ballard/ Roosevelt HS but so far putting down offers based on our budget has proven to be a challenge. I guess I just want to have some kind of reassurance before taking the big step of buying a home in a city we love but don't know very well yet! Thanks.

I can't speak specifically about Shorecrest's programs, but it is generally accepted as a good school in a good Shoreline district. However, you can request transfers to another district if you have a good argument as to why, and many times those requests will be granted. But be prepared to go through a lot of paperwork and b.s., then you have to deal with transportation issues, because nobody in Shoreline is going to bus your son to Roosevelt. (Unless things have changed in the past 15 years).

I would go with Shorecrest, and I'm sure your 14 year old will come away as a 17 year old with a good education and will be able to graduate with his neighbors.

Thank you @pnwguy2. I've read a lot of people saying it is perceived as a good school district but not actual parents / students talking about their experience. We have considered the out of school district transfer but like you say, not the best way to go when you are new to an area and trying to be part of a community. Thanks!

Well, parents/students will always voice the negatives, that is the nature of being asked about any situation. But you will likely not go wrong with the Shoreline School District. Good folks, good schools, and at the end of the day, a nice place to live.

Here's another source:

https://k12.niche.com/shorecrest-hig...-shoreline-wa/

Rates Shorecrest at "A-". Has 244 reviews (average 3.7 out of 5).

The alternative would be to look further east to get in the Northshore SD, although that doesn't mean you'd find a better school for your son (Bothell HS is rated at "B+").
