NYC to Seattle: HELP!

The biggest factors would be, it seems to me: 1) Where he's going to be based and 2) where he's most likely to find law enforcement work or training/education.

Commuting by car can be a killer here. If based at JBLM, you don't want to live in Seattle's Northend.

Tacoma's Northend is actually very nice, safe, and not far from JBLM. They also have a community-owned broadband network, while most of Seattle is a slave to Comcast if they want decent broadband.

Cost-of-living is also relative to pay-scales, which might not be as high here as in NYC. Relying on a car for commuting (we don't have anything like NYC's subways) is also more expensive than just using it for shopping, entertainment, and/or recreation.
