I'm a single 49 year old woman with an 18 year old daughter who is considering a job at Starbucks headquarters which is 2401 Utah Ave S (at Lander).

I have zero knowledge on Seattle and its neighborhoods. My daughter would be going to a city college and we would need to be near train/bus routes to commute. We'd like something safe and some charm and walkability to local restaurants etc. would be nice too. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Neighborhoods to consider/avoid etc. would be really helpful.

Thanks!

How long of a commute are you willing to commit too?
S-Bucks is in the SODO neighborhood, South of downtown. Seattle traffic can be tough so I'd suggest living East or South to avoid the Downtown traffic.

From what I do know of what your looking for, take a look at Beacon Hill and West Seattle.

Hi xpress. Welcome (almost) to Seattle! Are you looking to buy or rent? What's your budget? I assume you mean your daughter will be going to Seattle Central Comnunity College on Broadway Ave. Close by neighborhoods, walkable (to your daughter's school at least-would have a very short drive or bus to work) with character, include Capitol Hill, Madrona, parts of the Central District, North Beacon Hill and the ID (International
District). West Seattle is a short drive away, but convenient to Starbucks. Have a nice move.

Thanks to you both! We would be renting. Can't spend more than maybe $1,700/mo for a two bedroom. I'll give those neighborhoods a look. Again, safety is key...even if I have to give up character! Lol

If you are coming from another good sized city in the country, our "bad" neighborhoods won't seem very bad.

I would suggest Columbia City, and maybe consider some of the other suggestions on here.

I would avoid South Park and parts of downtown Seattle. There has been an influx of homeless people in Seattle in various places, so it's also about what you are willing to tolerate.

Sorry if I'm not more helpful.

West Seattle is a peninsula about 6 miles long. It has many neighborhoods and several ways on ingress/egress to the rest of Seattle and to freeways.

Just south of the bottom of the West Seattle peninsula is the city of Burien which also is worth considering. There are many buses to and from W Seattle and Burien; Burien has a big park and ride, too.

Trying to rent or buy in downtown Seattle and closer in neighborhoods like Capital Hill, First Hill and Queen Anne would be extremely expensive.

Yeah, look for areas near light rail stations: Columbia City, Mount Baker, and North Beacon Hill, for instance. There is a SODO Station within a short walking distance to Starbucks HQ. In early 2016, the Capitol Hill Station will be opening within a few blocks of Seattle Central CC.
