I'm moving to Seattle in early April. I'm following the family/grandkids due to a job change by my son in law. I have two unrelated questions:

1. My daughter (who is already in Seattle) says she heard it cost $1000 to register a car every year if you live inside of city limits. Can anyone help me figure out how much it will cost to register my 2009 Toyota Corolla? The WA DOT is not much help.

2. I'm 63 and looking at SHAG properties (Senior Housing Assistance) to rent. I meet the income qualifications. Does anyone have any direct experience or knowledge with these properties? I've spoken to them a few times but I wonder what it's actually like to live there.

Thanks!

Kathy

The following news story shows a cost of $267.75 for a 2012 Toyota Sienna:

Washington drivers hit with car-tab sticker shock | KING5.com

They are using a formula, required by the State Supreme Court, apparently, that exceeds Kelly Blue Book value.

Look here for more than just SHAG properties:

Wow! I'm glad I have a small, older car.

They're actually being sued for that cuz it was found they were using valuations about 30% higher than Kelly Blue Book, like what you're saying. And since Kelly's usually higher than NADA, that's saying something.

Should be interesting.

You can calculate your additional tax cost from ST3 here:

Sound Transit 3

You'll need to add that to current car tab/registration costs:

You realize ST3 expects a certain amount of dollars - even if your tabs go down, they'll just extend it til they get that amount of dollars.

There may be initial registration that is more but we have a 2009 toyota and I think our renewal was $100 and change this year. That was before the new tax but no way will it be anywhere near $1,000.

Fees are a controversial subject currently, but I agree with the above comment - $1,000 is nowhere close to accurate, especially for an older vehicle.

I don't live inside of city limits, but as I recall, there is yet another additional fee for Seattle residents. You can Google: Seattle Transportation Benefit District. There is a small rebate available for income-qualified city residents: Link

The part based on weight can run it up that high on a large RV, that's about it. Newer (2016-17) SUVs are still below $500, and may get lower yet if they correct the errors or are forced to use real retail values.
