It's a cash cow, and not going to have health benefits. Those that are hooked on those drinks will pay the tax and/or stock up when outside of the city limits. I work in Seattle, but don't drink sodas anyway. At work it's coffee and water, at home I make iced tea with very little sugar, or drink beer.

Will be going to Snohomish county for all my Vitamin Water shopping.. Although, I am planning on leaving SEattle because the place is already too expensive for me. Let's make it even less affordable. SOon they will pose a high fat food tax, a high carb food tax and just about any other tax you can imagine.

Some of these drinks they will tax are actually healthy for you, but it doesn't manner as the city council loves one thing $$$$$$$$$$$$.. Of course, the City Council knows more what is good and bad for you than yourself. They know what you need and you dare not question them.

Nail on the head, Roste. The tax wouldn't be a big cost to me personally, but I feel for the small businesses it would be a big burden on, as many are already facing challenges with staying afloat w/skyrocketing rents and such. And I don't buy the idea that the tax wouldn't mainly be paid for by the working/lower middle classes of Seattle.

Looks like the city didn't vote on the matter, yet. But perhaps we'll have an answer by Tuesday/next week.

It's just so high. They're taxing it by the ounce.

This tax is rediculious. People should be able to make their own decisions and not the city of seattle.

Meanwhile everyday there's a new shooting. Talk about wasted energy on yet another boondoggle when there's real issues that need addressing. Anyhoo, it's not the local governments duty to tell people what they can and cannot drink when it's perfectly legal to drink soda. Just another money grab disguised as something else. Rather embarrassing for the city all things considered, ie. the homeless, the out-of-control housing prices, daily shooting's, etc.

Far be it from me to stick up for Seattle politics in any manner, but the analogy of this vs. addressing the shootings is a false flag. There's nothing to be done about the gun violence that's picking up in the city. That's just part and parcel to go along with a combination of increased population, severely increased density (people don't like being on top of one another), and increased desperation on the part of residents who are fast being priced out of being able to survive, coupled with an overtly stated policy of coddling the homeless, actively seeking to protect criminals in the country illegally, and a police department that has largely been de-fanged because activist protester types didn't like that they were being told they couldn't do anything they wanted and get away with it - and the politicians bowing to them.

That's the new world order, and it's only going to increase from here, regardless of whatever harebrained schemes or laws the city tries to pass. Back when everything was largely on balance, this was just a town of passive aggressive cowards who liked breaking into property and stealing - the locals weren't bold enough to do anything confrontational. That's all changing. Welcome to real urban life - you longtime locals only thought you knew what that meant before. All things equal, it's still a safe city - I mean, Chicago has more murders in a productive weekend than Seattle will have all year - but that number is going to keep ticking up at a pretty good clip.
