Garages cost something like $50,000 per space to build all things considered. And they're a scarce commodity. If there's parking for $6 somebody is subsidizing you or perhaps drunk.

Actually, the latest figure for Seattle is $70,000 per space now. There has been some talk of the IRS taxing free parking as a benefit, as if it were income, so we have looked into it where I work. We have both free parking in a garage and subsidized Orca cards.

You do know Seattle has a parking tax? To add to all the other fine taxes we have.

Yes, in fact it's higher than the sales tax at 12.5% now.
