Hi guys,

I am hoping to have my mother move to the area from Florida, she's currently in a very hellish situation and her benefits are really bad in that area. She's unable to claim rent, so she's living on $400 a month, which is basically the rent she's paying. I've been supporting her financially otherwise, as she can't even afford food and it's getting to stressful for me, as her health is deteriorating further in that environment.

My apartment is too small for her to move in, also my partner isn't too comfortable with my mother crashing at our place for an extended period, which I understand based on the size of our apartment.

Basically, what I'm asking is if anyone has any experience with the benefits in the area. I tried to look online but couldn't find any exact answers. Have anyof you moved from out of state with disability? She's 57, so she's not old enough for senior housing.

Are there any housing options you would recommend or places to contact? Would it be possible for her to apply for housing out of state? She doesn't have many material items, so I can purchase her a one way ticket at any time necessary if she were to get approved.

Thank you

For subsidized and reduced-rent housing, see:

aptfinder | Low Income Housing at AptFinder.org

With subsidized housing, she'd pay 30% of her income (minus medical costs), while with reduced-rent housing, the landlord receives a tax credit for offering reduced rents to income qualified renters. Both seniors and disabled (non-seniors) can qualify for subsidized apartments, but most go to seniors or families. She'll have a much better chance outside of the Seattle area (Bremerton or Port Orchard, for instance). I'm assuming she doesn't have a Section 8 voucher, since she's basically paying her income in rent.

Note with "Project-Based Section 8" properties, the subsidy is attached to the property - your mother will not need a voucher as long as she can establish she is disabled (on SSI, SSD, etc.). Most of these properties are private. The waiting times are broad estimates and shouldn't be taken literally.

One option would be to move her out here, then see if you can find her a space in a decent women's shelter, while she applies for subsidized apartments (as many as possible).

She should have food stamps for the meantime.

Thank you kindly for the advice, I'm looking into it as we speak

she does have food stamps, but she only receives 90$ a month in Florida (they lowered it once she qualified as disabled), and her living situation only allows her food she can keep non perishable, so she's been reallly stretching it.

Thank you again.
