Quick question - does anyone know of any apartments which may allow a family to live in a studio? We are relocating to the area, and thought maybe we would bring our RV and park that in an RV park until we figured out exactly where we wanted to live. The one we are looking into is $830+ per month. At that price, maybe we're better off actually getting a studio apartment south of Seattle for almost the same price.

However - are there occupancy limits? I read an article specific to Seattle where the management company lost in court trying to force single occupancy for studio apartments. I've also read than an infant under the age of 1 (he's 6 months, 8 months when we move) also doesn't count "as a person", and we have a toddler who will turn 4 shortly after we move.

It seems silly to shove us into an RV which is quite small rather than pay the same amount for a short term studio apartment rental which would be MUCH more space!

We are thinking we don't want to just jump into a more expensive 2-3 bedroom apartment because we don't want to sign a long term lease somewhere until more familiar with the lay of the land, and also it would be nice to save up some $$ for a downpayment on a purchase by saving cost.

The amount of space in the studio doesn't bother us - we've been interested in "living small" anyway. Most important details are safe area and things for kids. (playgrounds nearby, etc.) We also don't want to live direct in the city, so any surrounding burbs are fine.

Are we crazy? Is it possible? Anyone done it?

You'll still likely have to sign a 12-month lease on that studio, if you can get someone to rent it to you.

Look for sublets, temporary housing, and short-term leases here: https://seattle.craigslist.org/d/sub...ary/search/sub

Beware of scams. For cheaper rents/rates, look in south Snohomish County or north Pierce County.

You might also look for a vacation rental on AirBnB or VRBO and ask if they have a weekly or monthly rate..

Yeah there are occupancy laws, but it's not hard to get around, just don't put everyone's name on the lease. Have you considered using Airbnb for short-term housing instead though?

I did check Airbnb and the prices were coming out quite high for long term rent in anything more than a shared accommodation. Going out on a limb here, but don’t think any Airbnb owners want to rent a single room to a full family of four.

Are there any cities in particular I should look at?

Nightly rates are high, but some might have a weekly rate that is lower. Give up on the idea you're going to find something for $800, unless willing to go way out.

North: Look in Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace, Everett, etc. Look for a lease takeover. For instance:

South: Tacoma, Puyallup, Federal Way, etc.
