Hey y'all,

I just moved to the area and am living in Shoreline. I was wondering, is there any "tamed wilderness" areas in the vicinity ~30 minutes?

What I mean is there are trails but it's not a groomed park with soccer fields, ect. I also don't want to be hiking in the middle of no where with no trails and just a compass (although I suspect there is nothing like that within 30 minutes of Shoreline).

Basically, trails (not paved) where it is unlikely I will encounter too many other people and can just hike in peace with or without my dog.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

I am not very familiar with that area so cannot give specific recommendations but my goto source is usually

Like this maybe?

Another good source is just plain google maps: open it up, find some green blob (like Deer Creek Park maybe?) and go check it out. Both of these methods are hit or miss in terms of crowds and quality - the only way to know for sure is to go and check it out.

Oh and the Discovery Park suggested above is awesome and is one of the reasons we chose to live in Magnolia I didn't suggest it only because it's not super close to Shoreline.

Discovery and Carkeek, I'll second those! There will be a few others on the trail but it's still very nice. Seward Park in South Seattle is worth a drive too, really cool park.

A little further, but Cougar Mountain is a great place-- very much the "wilderness" with trails. You could craft some extremely long hikes. There has been the occasional cougar spotted.https://www.wta.org/news/go-hiking/h...44586c5627eeb3.

(I realize this is not North Seattle, but it's worth the drive once in a while if you have time and want to check it out!)

Or there are a lot of hikes out Highway 2, via Monroe.

Agreed, Wallace Falls and Bridal Veil Falls (or continuing on to Lake Serene if you have more time) are two of my favorites.
