Our daughter just got orders to go to Ft. Lewis for the next 3 years..(Army Psychologist). She is moving from Florida sight unseen but wants to possibly buy a house within a 30 minute commute time to the base. Her budget is $320K and is ok with "up and coming neighborhoods" but not a repo or a total DIY job.... she has a dog and a cat and is single with no kids. Can you suggest neighborhoods that would fit that bill? Thanks!

There is some nearby good and sketchy areas that aren't that far from each other. Steilacoom and Lakewood might be good starting points.

Haven't been down in recent history but I'd avoid Parkland and Spanaway.

Steilacoom may be the best fit, parts of DuPont too.

If she could handle a 35-40 minute drive, depending on traffic, she might be able to slide into a little character bungalow in Olympia, our state capitol and a neat community.

Great. Olympia, by the way, is a small city, not a neighborhood. Here's a neat little video someone made that will give you taste.
