Anyone here working in biotech? I used to work at Immunex and Amgen, went through the 2011 Amgen layoff, and am now at MD Anderson in Houston. I REALLY need to get out of Texas and with the kids grown and out, am starting to think about a move back. However, the obvious concern is housing and that alone has me thinking that I won't be able to do it. My wife doesn't work, so no other income unless she were to get some sort of hourly position. I have been in the biotech/oncology research field since 1996 (B.S. degree), so have a lot of experience. I lived in Marysville and the house that we sold there in 2012 for $210k sold in April 2020 for $362k - in Marysville! I'm not sure how salaries in the field are running up there right now, but not sure it would be enough to adequately afford to live there now. Any thoughts/input from anyone here? Thanks.

I know nothing about biotech, but how much are you making now? I'd assume you could negotiate something at least as high as your current salary, especially since you're coming from Houston.

I don't see a ton of results in the area, though, and no relevant ones with salaries listed. Though I'm coming from software development where seeing tens of thousands of companies and shooting out dozens or hundreds of applications is normal.

If $362k is out of reach, though, your options are pretty limited in the area if you're looking to buy a house. Even in Kent most of the Zillow listings I'm seeing are in the $400-800k range. You'd need to live about as far out as you could feasibly commute from.

Now probably isn't the best time to buy anyway, though, we're likely near the end of a bubble.

I'm at $120k right now. Should've never left but that's behind me now. I know much has changed up there in ten years too. Still a bummer for someone that really wants to get out of TX but not sure it's feasible. I do still know quite few people in the field but haven't really started reaching out yet. Thanks for your input at any rate.
