Hello,

We had a new concrete patio built in the back yard. A small and basic one - 16x16. The guys finished the job yesterday and said that everything was done. Since we get a lot of rain for 8+ months I asked him that it was very important to grade it properly so all the water flows away from the house and towards the corner.

This morning I poured some water on the patio to make sure that it was sloped right. I noticed that there were multiple small puddles forming on the patio. Not major/large ones but clearly there are multiple areas where water is staying stagnant. I am worried that this will drastically reduce the longevity of the patio. In addition, there were multiple locations where the finishing was just not done right (according to me). But the concrete contractor is saying that the water puddling is normal and no one can build a perfectly sloped patio. Also, he says that these imperfections are pretty normal. May be I can look past imperfectly finished patio surface but water puddling worries me.

Is this normal that concrete patio surfaces can't be 100% graded/sloped for water to flow away? Or Should I ask them to fix it before making full payment?

Thanks.

Edit:
The overall slope seems to be right. When I just open the tap and let the water flow (simulating rain), the water flows in the right direction. It is after I stop putting water, once most of the water has run off, I start noticing these water puddles that are left over.

Normal yes, but shouldn't be. As good as the contractor is, there are circumstances that cause the problem. After pouring and floating, even with the correct slope for runoff, there can be setting as the concrete cures, due to softer spots in the soil below the gravel. It's almost never going to be perfect. Our neighbors had a new concrete driveway poured and it has bigger puddles than that. If all the puddles are 1/8” deep or less it's not a warranty issue, and won't affect the life of the concrete normally. If it's deeper than that you might want to have them come out and look at it.

That's pretty minor "puddling" - the water that is there looks mostly due to the surface texture of the concrete.
