It’s often said that the Seattle area isn’t a very diverse place but I disagree. Maybe it’s that some of my favorite eateries are little hole in the wall ethnic places. I see (and interact with) large and thriving communities of people descended from Ethiopia, India, Korea, Phillippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Honduras, Mexico, El Salvador, Eritrea, China, Somalia, Japan, to name a few. Case in point, check out this big Ethiopian festival that happened here last weekend. “Thousands gathered on Sunday to mark the two-day Ethiopian Orthodox holiday after two years of the pandemic and the Tigray war”. https://crosscut.com/culture/2023/01...eturns-seattle

Lots of folks from around the world here. I like going over to Overlake & Redmond, where the large Indian and east Asian presence has sustained a lot of restaurants, grocery stores, and small markets.

What's your point? The thread topic is the diverse nature of Seattle's population. That has nothing to do with politics. Try to stay on-topic.

OP, I think the comments about Seattle's lack of diversity tend to come from people representing the US's main minorities, who move to the area for jobs. They inquire in advance of their move, or after they arrive, where the communities are (if any defined communities), where they might find friends or dates they might have a lot in common with, community centers to hang out in, etc.

I'm recalling past threads along those lines. Those OP's haven't been looking for Ethiopian or Thai restaurants, Somalians, Honduran refugees, or colorful festivals on international themes. That hasn't been the gist of their inquiries.

"diversity" is often a codeword for black people, used in both positive and negative ways. Asian and Hispanic people tend to be left out of this meaning, which is why you sometimes get odd claims or complaints about diversity that don't really stack up.

Ethiopian culture and history is a great asset to the world. My interactions with Ethiopians have always been very pleasant, and their food is great. Especially their trademarked, patented and copyrighted Njera and coffee.

Makes it all the strange to see the violence in their great nation.

When people say that Seattle "isn't diverse" they don't mean racially, but culturally. The city is very White culturally and it has a pervasive White liberal mindset. Seattle tends to absorb it's POC into a White monocultural blob so actual diversity gets destroyed in the end.

I actually find that many times people mean that we have a low percent of African Americans in Seattle. You are mixing up two different things, IMO. Yes there are a lot of left leaning people here but that doesn’t really have anything to do with ethnic or cultural diversity. There are very proud, vibrant and intact communities around here of many of the groups I’ve mentioned.

Seattle politics is the driving factor with the woke culture and diverse which are driving normal people to the suburbs and beyond.
