I'm from Oakland, btw, and I can assure you that it's still full of beautiful neighborhoods that aren't "scary". Same with San Francisco. Have you ever been to those cities? If not, don't let the internet bias you; there's a lot of exaggeration and misinformation on internet forums, not to mention any in particular....

Weren't you going to move to a northern suburb? How are your plans for that coming along? When will your current lease be up?

I have been to san francisco amd walnut creek many many many times. San Francisco was one of my favorite places to visit while living in the LA area. Even when I moved to seattle in 2015 I still liked to visit San Francisco from seattle.

My favorite places in San Francisco are chestnut street, fishermans warf, north beach

In walnut creek I like Broadway plaza

I hear things that I don't know how true they are?? Things like San Francisco is full of drug dealers and homeless.

In terms of me moving to Lynnwood or edmonds unfortunately I can't find a 1 bedroom apartment under $2300 a month.

In August 2024 my 1 bedroom apartment in northagte seattle is going to be $1395 per month

Fact of life: Anybody can drive/ride anywhere. Bad things can happen anywhere, at anytime. Nowhere is immune. For the gangs, the whole city is a battleground. Some areas are better or worse than others, however - you have to decide what your risk tolerance is: lower risk (but paying a premium) or higher risk (but getting a discount). Just for the sake of comparison:

https://www.zillow.com/b/shangri-la-seattle-wa-9VXP7P/ (Cedar Park/Lake City) $1,295 550sf

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/9...86836164_zpid/ $1,350 670sf

I mean, they're not UNtrue. Every city has "drug dealers and homeless" to some degree, especially in the rougher/downtown neighborhoods. But life is what you make of it, and personally it's never bothered me... and yes, I lived in SF proper for many years. A friendly smile goes a long way, as does simply minding your own business. And for every bad neighborhood there are even more nice & safe ones, but of course you get what you pay for. So you can't be looking at the cheapest units in town, and then complain there's some riff raff outside your door.

$2300 in Edmonds will get you a 2 br. apartment. 1 br. is cheaper.

The problem with apt.-searching online is that the corporate-owned complexes flood the listings, so it's hard to find the reasonably-priced locally-owned units. You have to get past the first page of listings, many of which are repetitive: showing the same units and buildings over and over.

Here's what looks like a nice MIL unit in Edmonds for $1450/mo.:

There are probably others. It's all in knowing how to search so as to avoid the corporate-owned complexes. I've had people tell me, that all the apts. in Bremerton area now going for Seattle-level rents, but I never have any trouble finding "normal", i.e. not artificially-inflated rents in that area. Just bypass all those corporate listings.

This is in Edmonds, but is a block east of 99:

https://www.peaklivingps.com/edmonds28 ($1,395) - their map misidentifies the location as 20 blocks further east. See:

There is a lot of fraud on craigslist. Most people don't use it anymore as a house/apartment hunting tool, so be mindful of that.

There are quite a few rentals in Edmonds and Lynnwood that are in the corridor around 99, about 2 blocks away in each direction, that are more affordable than the norm. Unless that area's undergoing some gentrification, I wouldn't recommend it. Plus there's all the traffic noise and air pollution to live with, if you're just a block or two away from 99.
