San Diego is the 6th largest city in the country. Seattle is 24 and Portland is 30. While you can compare Seattle and Portland in terms of size, San Diego is in a different ballpark altogether.
City populations are irrelevant. The metropolitan area is whats important. San Diego is bigger than Portland and smaller than Seattle in terms of metro areas.

I've lived in both Seattle and Portland. I grew up in Bellingham then lived in Seattle for 4 years after graduating from college and am now living in the Portland area. I'm in a completely different place in my life now than I was when I lived in Seattle but I still very much prefer Seattle over Portland. The Oregon coast is amazing and very beautiful but it's a 90 min drive from Pdx whereas you can access the Puget sound very easily and quickly from Seattle. Not to mention the multitude of large lakes in the Seattle area compared to the Willamette river (which is filthy) in Pdx. Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike Pdx and who knows if I would feel the same about Seattle moving back with a family compared to living there as a young, single person, but my memories of Seattle are far more fond than my current reality in Pdx.

My girlfriend moved from Portland (after living there for 2 years) to Seattle so we could be closer. She wasn't sure at first (it's always scary moving away from something you know into the unknown) but now she *loves* it here. She loves that there is so much more to do and see. Don't get me wrong, we both like Portland, we just find Seattle to offer more opportunity all around (economically, shopping, quality of life, jobs, recreation, etc.)
