I am a law student, currently living in the U District, and have found it to be quite expensive, and not very nice. I've found a good apartment deal in the Mt. Baker /Columbia City area. Does anybody have any thoughts on the area, in terms of shopping, walkability, transportation, etc? I know it's come a long way, but is it really a livable area for a young person?

Go for it!

Columbia City has had a tremendous rejuvanation over the past decade and is a vibrant, multi-cultural, and eclectic community. It's convenient to downtown and has excellent public transportation.

I think you could even stay on one bus all the way to the U-district but probably would be quicker to make a transfer downtown.

Translastion: Full of nuts and flakes.

Lots of crime. Next door to the Bad Part of Town. You couldn't pay me to live there.

aaw, c'mon, it isn't THAT bad!

A decade ago, perhaps. Crime has actually decreased in recent years in Columbia City. Or that's what one SPD officer told me last year. I'll check into it further when I get the chance.
