I graduated from UW about 7 years ago. I originally lived about 5 blocks off campus, hated it so I moved to Eastlake where I've been ever since - there isn't much here in terms of restaurants/culture, but it's fairly quiet and centrally located (there lots of development going on though).

You probably know this, but Seattle isn't much of 'college-town' at all. It's a large city where a state college just happens to be, so when you're out of the U-dist, it won't feel like college at all.

Here's the page from the UW's website that might help:

Scholarships » University of Washington Undergraduate Admissions*»* Paying For College*»* Freshman*»* Scholarships

And I ran across this page while looking for something else:

List of Scholarships

I tend to slightly disagree with this statement. In the years that I've lived in Seattle, it looks to me like the University Avenue has deteriorated considerably. It's had some ups and downs, but when I went to undergrad nearly 18 years ago, it was very safe.

Some Seattle busses don't run all that often so I'd take that into consideration when picking a place to live. I'd toy with the idea of Capital Hill or Wallingford. One of the nice things about Capital Hill is that it has its own small student culture because SU is there as well as a large community college on Broadway (the main drag of Cap Hill). Capital Hill doesn't seem nearly to me as it used to be years ago.

Another thought might to be to live off of the 44 bus route but way out in Ballard. The 44 takes you right into UW and runs fairly frequently but it's a slow run, and Ballard to UW is quite the schlep. Ballard would have the advantage of being low-crime, less expensive than perhaps Queen Anne or Cap Hill, and has it's own unique vibrant community.
