Got this idea from the San Francisco forum.

When I went to Seattle, my friend who's from New England thought it reminded her of Boston. I've mentioned before that it reminds me of Berkeley Ca. Here are my reasons why:

This is College and Alcatraz Avenues right at the city limits of Oakland and Berkeley, taken in Berkeley. It reminds me of the intersection of 5th and Mercer looking west. But here, I'm looking south.

Tie-die stands are common in both cities.

Tree-lined residential streets look quite similar

And many houses have that "New England-esque" look. This is all Berkeley

So what city have you all been to that reminds you of Seattle?

When I first visited Seattle, I told my girlfriend the city reminded me a little bit of Boston, a little San Francisco and even a little downtown St. Paul!

There are few American cities that remind me of Seattle. San Diego used to remind me of Seattle a bit with the hills, the way I-5 lays out, but the similarities kind of end there. Internationally, Oslo, Norway shares some commonalities, but Oslo is certainly more historic.
Some have said that Melborne or Brisbane, Australia are similar, but never havng been, can only go by photos.

Beyond that, Vancouver BC has similar vegetation, similar montain surroundings (albeit a bit closer-in and more breathtaking there), and perhaps even Anchorage in a strange way...while Anchorage has a completely different climate, it provides a maritime atmosphere with mountains nearby, and one doesn't have to travel far to be in the wilderness.

Bottom line, Seattle is quite unique. Please don't mention London. The only two things these cities share is a similar climate and a rather coolish, polite citizenry.

The odd answer is Minneapolis or Pittsburgh. Both are northern cities with rather homogenous ethnic populations, and similarities in different categories. Minneapolis/St Paul has grown almost as quickly as Seattle/Tacoma, is heavily "nordic". and has a history of beng tech-savvy. Pittsburgh is at its heart an industrial city, which Seattle was as well atleast through the early 80's. Pittsburgh is also one of the hilliest cities in the east, another commonality with Seattle.

Seattle may be "yuppy", or "yuppie", depending on your spelling acumen, but it certainly does not define the population, or even most newcomers. The main attributes of Seattle include the mix of the so-called "yuppies", combined with many longtime residents who love the city and choose to live in the city not because they are necesarilly urban, professional, or even young. It's a giant misnomer. Seatle is a culturally diverse city (not necesarilly racially), but in almost every other aspect. So if you've seen one yuppie city, no, you have not seen them all. Seattle continues to be one of the most unique, diverse cities you will find in North America, with intellectual ideas that run the gamut. If anything "gets my goat", (whatever that really means), is that all Seattle residents share the same beliefs about everything. So NOT true. And one of the things that make Seattle special.

Please don't respond to people like that. This is for those of us who like the city. Let the trolls have conversations with themselves only.

Yeah, I know...you are right. But I guess Seattle is still young and unknown enough where it is easy to get defensive. But the truth is, a REAL city doesn't need to defned itself. The city speaks for itself. Good point.

Exactly. Seattle speaks for itself and those of us who like it, should keep it at that. Talking about what we love and why.
