I am thinking of moving from the washington DC area to go to grad school at UW.

I am in my mid 20s and I am female.

What is the dating scene like there?

Seattle, in my experience, is very organized in terms of dating. Go find a club, organization, or get-together type of thing that centers around what you like to do (outdoors activities like hiking, canoeing, etc are popular, as are professional organizations for young professionals), and start attending. No hard and fast rules either. You likely won't be approached randomly on the street, maybe at a coffeehouse, maybe at a book store ... basically rarely in public places outside of bars and clubs on bar nights. People here are reserved and don't like bursting out of their shell and are easily intimidated by very outgoing people. So, in a nutshell, organizations and clubs are your best bet for finding someone. One thing I noted, too, is a lot of people "dip the pen in the company ink" so to speak around here. It was very taboo back in the Midwest, but here it seems more accepted. I know more than one married couple at my employer who met at work.

Of course, go where the younger crowds are at if you want to try your hand at public encounters. Ballard, Capitol Hill, downtown, and Georgetown offer "traditional" kinda trendy, with some laid back; mixed bag interesting; everything under the sun; underground artsy type of people, respectively.

^ That pretty much sums it up.

One little secret is that it is very easy for women here to find a guy. The only drawback is many of them tend to have issues. At least thats what I've heard from my lady friends.
