Hello all,

I am posting this thread because I just recently graduated from college in Northern California and will be moving to Washington State in the next few weeks.

My Job will be in Federal way....I don't necessarily plan to live there as I have not herd the best of things about it. I have herd that Kent is a nice place.....?

I am an outdoors-man I enjoy hunting, fishing, hiking etc. I am 24 years old so I would prefer to be in a spot that offers a young adult plenty of options for entertainment. I would also not like to commute over half an hour to work 1 way.

If anyone out there can give their $0.02 on what area they think would suit me the best I would appreciate it!

There's not a lot of difference between Kent and Federal Way. They both have nice areas and not so nice areas. South King County is like that all over, kind of like a checkerboard. Avoid the large low income apartment complexes if possible. The big nightlife scene is in Seattle. Lots of pool tables and karaoke in S.King though. If you like fishing maybe look for a place near the water. These are the more expensive and nicer areas like Redondo, Browns Point, Des Moines marina etc.

Tacoma is an option. The nicer neighborhoods are in the north end. There are bars and cafes that draw a younger crowd on 6th Ave. near the U of Puget Sound. You might like Old Town which is also in North Tacoma. You can jog or ride a bike on Ruston Way which runs along the waterfront, there are fishing piers there too. You'll see lots of people there on a nice day.The Stadium District is near downtown Tacoma and has a lot of historic old apartment buildings and business district. The drawback there is most of them have no parking so you have to park on the street.

Default also looking in South King County

bhayes1 - did you end up finding anything good? My husband and I are moving into the area this week and are also having trouble finding places to live in South King County that look good! Is Federal Way as bad as we have heard?

Thanks very much!

... What exactly is "bad" about Federal Way? It's just another (suburbia/suburban sprawl) area with a big mall and shopping area (fulfills just about every shopping needs-- it even has a Trader Joe's). The area is very diverse racially. The City of FW offers free wifi to everybody. The schools' are average, though it does offer the Cambridge Program for HS'ers (being one of few to offer on the entire West Coast). Highway 99 does goes through it-- so it has that "bad" element. But otherwise it's generally a safe place with very easy access to the beach (Dash Point, Redondo Beach and Saltwater State Park).

Have a look at Covington, it's a really nice area with all of the amenities and is a short 20 minute commute on Highway 18, or at least will be once they finish the current construction at 18 and I5. Between the two is big shopping mall.

Highway 99 is like a vein of suck that runs through the region. Avoid living along the narrow band within a quarter or half mile on either side of/ it and you'll generally be okay.
