Yup plenty of volcanoes, none around me though... I didn't say Alaska didn't have volcanoes, but there's only one active in the interior (if you can even call it a volcano)

I have been away from tv news and PC over a few days. Is the containment broken or is it not?
I only know sea water is being pumped on reactor 3.

Yes, I know, but I think that comment was just another in a never ending chain of posts discounting the idea of preparation in general. It could have been posted on a thread concerning the dangers of tsunamis a few weeks ago. It could be on a thread concerning earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, volcanic activity, drought, flooding, famine, civil unrest, etc. I guess I've just become jaded in general. People SEE all of this stuff happening all around the world, yet continue to spout off about tin foil hats if one even hints that being prepared for some of these things might be a good idea. What does it take? A tsunami rushing up their butts? Would they get it then?
So this thread is about preparedness? Really?
If I read it correctly it just told us to be scared and click on some youtube video.
Currently, I'm not sold on the strategy of crying myself to sleep in fear and cruising the internet for "disaster porn" as a viable means of preparing for real threats.
I must say your chats have been entertaining to say the least. I have followed this line of confab in various forums and they all do the same thing try to incite panic of some kind, warn, inform, joke or poke fun at, etc. funny thing is the people who do the "they aren't telling us the truth" panic/semi panic "take cover" information never ever really say what normal people can do about it or how it will effect or affect them.
You want to worry, panic, not panic, not worry, whatever do what you want to do. Not one of us can control or do anything about it unless we are leaders in disasters of this kind. We had no control over 3 mile Island, yet we lived. People still live next door to that location. We had no control over Chernobyl, well ya can't live near there but we are all still alive. If you want to worry about cancer settling in your body, then remember you can get cancer by ANY means in fact it is said we all have cancer cells it just a matter of if/when they become active.
So panic, worry, fret, just don't try to take everyone with you. Cause personally I ain't going there. There are people who are in those plants working hard to save their people and their country. I will bank on that! A little radiation? pah! I live I die. case closed. why worry over something you can't control.
You want to help someone, tell them the best way to prepare. Tell them how they can be ready for radiation on a budget.
Personally I am more afraid of a person who is talking on the phone while driving. You see one person drive through a red light or stop sign while on a phone you don't seem to worry about Japan radiation soo much. You just pray for those lovely people and while you are at it pray for people to get thier darn ear off the phone while driving.

And what would those "real threats" be? If radiation has been stricken from your list of "real threats" for time and all eternity, why don't you educate us non-prophets on what you KNOW to be real threats and what you KNOW not to be real threats. I have my list and a Sharpie right here. Enlighten us. Dust off that crystal ball.
Though I am admittedly a party of one, I'm not gonna get my panties in a wad over this.
First, it must be understood that I live in the greater Los Angeles area, which ostensibly is in the direct path of any radioactive particles emanating from the Japanese nuclear reactors.
Second, there is a whole danged lot of Pacific Ocean between me and the damaged Japanese reactors.
Third, I did my homework on nuclear fallout better than 25 years ago. My research focused on the findings published by the Oak Ridge National Laboratories, not those of Fox Noise or CNN. In other words, combining numbers two and three, I AIN'T WORRIED.
Fourth, in the remote chance that the ship should hit the sand, I have two (count 'em, TWO) recently-calibrated radiation (aka Geiger) counters. One is a surplus Civil Defense meter for general use, while the other is a much more sensitive medical instrument for detailed work.
