Hey guys. I am an Alaskan and I wanted out of the rat race. I worked my butt off for nearly a year and saved up every penny i could. I have this crazy sense of adventure and I can see where our country is heading. It was obvious even a year ago. The Alaskan winters were getting old and my main hobby is gold prospecting. For the last 2 years i have been researching warm, tropical climates that have a lot of gold. I decided on Ecuador.

After saving up for a year and purchasing my ticket, i took the plunge. I figured a poor country would be safer to be in, over a 1st world country who doesn't know how to deal with being poor, if you understand what i mean. I am referring to a world financial collapse which is going to eventually happen. I have been here for 6 months now and having the time of my life. I am as much a treasure hunter as I am a gold prospector and some pretty awesome projects are starting up. Once things are established we plan on starting an intentional self-sufficient community based on adventure and treasure hunting. I have grown up outdoors, and i know all about jungle survival. I feel like I am ready for whatever happens for the most part.

Anyone else consider something like what I am doing? Gold prospecting is sort of like printing your own money that gains in value. Yes, i understand that you can't eat your gold. I will have land, gardens, fresh water and ammo all secured.

AA

Well, you sound like me, but it sounds like you have the money to do it.
I believe America is collapsing too, and hell is right around the corner. You see it in the workplace, with crazy workers, and the crime, and loss of jobs.

I love this nation, and everything it ONCE stood for, and was founded on, but it's like a lover gone bad and betrayal, it simply isn't what it was...

I can't live the way I want to live here. I am not mesmerized by TV, I am not beholden to trends, or care about what any of the TV or news gurus say.

I see things for myself and I see them digressing on a daily basis.

I feel like there is this small voice, and it's saying, if you don't get out now, when you want to, you won't be able to....

I will not leave. I have friends who have, and friends who want to, and friends who are planning to. But I won't. I am an American. And in spite of the communists who are battling daily to lessen my country, the socialists who don't have any idea in what their kenyesian demands will result, the Marxists who are fighting diligently to overthrow everything that is good and decent, and the terrorists who want to destroy everyone who doesn't think as they, America is still the better bet on a resurgence of a republic than those countries who have never had it and have no knowledge of it. I still believe in the Founding Fathers' ideals; those ideals that drew my starving family across an ocean to be free. And leaving my country because it gets too hard just isn't in my makeup. More power to you, in Ecuador, Brazil, Belize, or wherever you end up. Of course if the S does HTF, which of these poor countries will be still poorer, how many will collapse even more quickly into violence (especially against gringos), starvation, and warlord behaviours, and how will you get back to America if it does HTF? If there really IS a pandemic, what sort of medical care will be available to expatriates in foreign lands that can't even take care of their own? If you can't own property, how can you be assured of its ongoing productivity, and if you CAN own property - how can you be confident that the country's next government or angry citizenry won't take it away from you? There will be a worldwide splatter, and no one, no country, will be untouched.

Not trying to be nasty here, just offering thoughts that some young folks don't always consider.

I looked into central America a while back, just for the hell of it, just so I could say to myself that I was making a good faith effort to explore as many options as possible. Nothing seemed to fit.

I was initially prompted to look into the aforementioned because articles in newspapers like the Wall Street Journal kept bragging about how certain central american countries were becoming retirement havens for U.S. citizens. Well, that may be the case that it has some attraction to people who may have money, and where that is there primary concern... but overall, I'm not seeing the attraction for a person like me.

South America seemed like a total wash. Not my kind of place, I don't think. Did not expend much effort looking into it, as I generally know what I am looking for. Goes into the same bin as Africa..... maybe a bit better. If I ever get bored one day, I'll get back into looking at some more countries.

Uninhabited (or low population) pacific islands have been a dream of mine since I was a little kid, but they are all problems galore, as well. The main problem being that they are mostly under the thumb of larger governments, which then brings much baggage with it. The micronations that are relatively autonomous have problems as well, in that some of them are controlled under the umbrella of a "confederation" (works similar to how the EU operates), and the members of these confederations have pretty disagreeable laws. (Firearms and almost all pacific islands do not go well together)

All in all, I'm hard pressed to find a reason to leave the United States. It's just bad news, pretty much anywhere you go on this planet. The good points don't seem to nearly outweigh the bad points of these places, such that moving could ever be worth it [to me]. I can be hassled with bureaucracy right here in the good ol' USA.... don't need to waste all my money moving across the pacific ocean, just to have to deal with the same ol' same ol'.

Very cool. I did something similar (minus the treasure hunting, anyway) in Bolivia and Brazil for a year, but I came back to the USA after getting seriously sick about a decade and a half ago. It changed my life, expanded my horizons and I even got my annoying screen name down there.

No debes tomar el agua cruda! I also learned they don't call the Amazon "the green hell" for nothing; I think I'd rather sit out an economic collapse here than fight for survival out of a hut in Pando again. Good luck!

There are few nations with even a good economy, so that's not the goal here, survival is...

The object is to find a place you can survive in.

You aren't going to get Nirvana here...

I don't think going to the Amazon is the idea either, even though it was found to be exciting.

This is about when the huge American population is fighting each other for water, food, etc., when the SHTF.

I don't think that will happen overnight, but we are seeing the slow decline of civilization...we are past the event horizon.

Naw, the world won't end, even with a collapse imminent. Finding a good hidey-hole and staying there is no good for me. I intend to help put civilization back together after SHTF day.

I've been to other countries.

They like us for our Greenbacks.

I've also been to other country's where they didn't like us even WITH our greenbacks.

When the Greenbacks arn't worth anything...

I wouldn't want to be 'the gringo' without air support being available!

Default Looks like a good idea

The land of the Free and the Home of the Brave has become increasingly the Soviet States of America. Seriously wonder if I should have had the guts to move to South America after getting out of school many years ago. Was offered a job teaching English in Columbia. It was alot of fun wondering around Columbia.

I would be worried for people who may have good pensions and live them near the max and what could happen if purchasing power for the dollar declines.

But a skill set that pays on the world market is another story.

How does everyone somehow manage to get along fine without uncle sugar and the nanny state?

There are alot of middle class people outside the USA. There people who thrive including immigrants.

How do you like the locals? What kind of other expats do you find doing alright and how?
