Which is a wiser choice for home protection? Should a person choose a professionally trained protection dog or get an expensive alarm system. My thought is that both would be optimum, but, lets just suppose you could only have one of either.
An expensive alarm? Expensive means different things to different people. What do you consider expensive? In the end the dog could cost you a great deal of money. No matter how well he is trained, if he bites someone you will be settling a law suit, and you will lose your dog. Another problem with a dog is someone poisoning him. An alarm doesn't have to be expensive to work well and protect your property.
The wisest choice for home protection is layers; not to rely on one thing (alarm or dog) but have a series of protections (lighting, alarm, dog, personal protection device & training, etc.... combined).
Which is better-Attack trained dog or expensive alarm

Agreed! Don't depend on only one thing to protect you or your property. These are wise words from lifelongMOgal, in above post, she knows what she is talking about.
A real bad guy will simply either make friends with the dog or kill it. Such dogs don't come cheap trained, and they only last 15 years if that, and only then if nothing goes wrong. They never stop eatting either, or going to the vet.
I speak dog, and it works two ways for me. Either I make friends, or the very timid dog will run way.
If you can have just 1, choose the alarm, where someone calls you if it goes off. These can also do fire, smoke and be set up for several options. Any dog that will bark is nice, but an attack trained dog could be a problem. It could attack the wrong people, and you could get sued. Any dog subject to this sort of thing can get dead too. It depends on the who you are planing to stav off as well as to what you do.
Ever see the commercial for Brinks when the burglar enters the home? Lady panics as the alarm is whaling in the background. The Brinks operator calls her and she answers. "This is Brinks Home Security........... is everything alright mam"? In a whimper voice.............. "NOOOOOO"! The Brinks guy.........."I'll call the Police"! Who gives a f***, you are dead and YOU COULD CALL YOURSELF! Don't ever rely on a alarm by itself!

An attack dog can't call the police, and is fairly easy to disable quickly. Not top mention the potential liability if it gets out or a kid gets into your yard to fetch his ball. The added benefit for an alarm is having it detect fires also.
In most neighborhoods they do serve to deter, a burglar given the choice willo hit the house next door without it, but if they are experienced and know
you have good stuff will find a way to defeat it or get in and out before any police can respond. Video is so cheap these days, a good system that records onto a hard drive on a hidden laptop will at least help identify
them.
A trained attck dog will be very expensive besdies the liabilty involved;really.
