After some hours cutting and peeling off the husks, and wire brushing with water the last hull gunk off the nuts, I've got lots of the following drying on racks:

When I get to the area again, I'll get a pic of the trees, they have no leaves left now but their distinctive bark may help others ID some trees.

If it has survived around other trees, then I am sure it would be useful for that restoration project.

Maybe. I think it's showing the early signs of having the canker. If it can survive the canker attacking it, it may be useful. It is well past the smooth bark stage so it's survived quite a while since then despite nearby trees dying off, so maybe it has a little resistance, or at least tolerance, of the canker...
