Kawasaki KLR650. Dual-purpose, single cylinder, carburetor, water-cooled, large fuel tank. Cult following has worked out just about any production issues. Not for shorter people, but can be lowered. US Marines use a special diesel version.
Less carrying capacity, but allows for bypassing traffic issues.
My unscientific theory is your destination should be within tank range of your vehicle: having a full tank of fuel, plus carrying enough fuel for contingencies without compromising other storage. Unless you already have all your gear at your final location, then your vehicle can be modified with extra fuel tanks.
I'd buy a reliable Toyota truck with a small lift on it. Check out this video of what they put an older Tacoma through. The 2:30 mark is pretty funny because they put it in the ocean and get it back out.
Something like an older ford 7.3 idi diesel 4x4 that can be easily modded to run on homemade bio. Millions of parts for them all over North America, easy to work on, and durable.
Ok, since we have a bugout carts thread, how about best bugout vehicle, period? I know all-wheel drive is a must, but really all kinds of ideas are said re best overall "that isn't too hard to find/buy" mainstream-wise. I'm not into mega effort customizing so trying to be able to buy something, other than my older Ford Ranger 2-wheel drive pickup here in AZ yet (snow-free of course always here, til we move up north very soon hopefully later this yr).
Thanks all for insights.
pre-computer meaning no computer in the vehicle, a 2-4 inch lifted K5-Blazer.
