There's so much bad information - even on THIS thread!! Wow. The government is going jam all the frequencies? That one just leaves me shaking my head. The government is going to track you down if you have a license? There are 738,000 licensed hams in this country.

This started out as an interesting thread but went downhill really fast.

All because people really are in love with their cell phones. How sad.

Here's a tip: My children are not into ham radio, but I've taught them how to spot the antennas (vertical and horizontal) so if stuff happens, they can find the operators in their neighborhoods and get a message out to Mom in Norfolk.
I think as much of the problem in this thread isn't from just the cell phone lovers like myself but rather those who think the government will shut down Hamm signals and C.B. Radio capabilities. The fact is cell phones aren't perfect but I won't claim it as Allah over me. That said depending on your plan, your service and typography, you may or may not have service. Verizon for example, really great during disasters including 9/11.

It depends on what exactly the "disaster" is. SW radio has proven its value over the past 90 yrs in times of trouble- from localized natural disasters to world wars to maintaining communication with the outside word during the Cold War. Cell phone service, OTOH, was in fact disrupted by the govt in recent events such as the Ferguson MO & Baltimore riots. An EMP event, natural or man-made will certainly render cell phones useless.

There may be 700,000 Ham licensees, but there's 80,000,000 Fed employees to search them out if the going gets really tough. In a real EOTWAWKI scenario, remaining hidden will have much more survival value than remaining in communication with people who are too far away to render you any material assistance.

Can Ham radio be used to transmit data?

Okay, I give up on this thread. Officially. LOL.

You think there are 80 million federal employees? There are about 20 million people employed by local, state and federal governments. And they're not coming after people with ham radio licenses, even if there was a catastrophic event. Why would they?

This thread turned strange in a hurry, which is a pity. Too many kids today have no awareness of the many limitations of their little phones and the many benefits of becoming a licensed ham radio operator.

Does anyone know how jamming is done? Maintaining communications is fine, but it may be just as necessary to disrupt enemy communications after TEOTWAWKI.

On the contrary. We're discussing communications in the time of some major disaster. If that disaster is a crisis in which martial law has been declared by the Feds, then it may be a situation in which they would want to disrupt communications to prevent organized resistance. Having licensing info on Ham operators would be to the Feds advantage, just as having gun registration info would be. Maybe we need to review the history of central Europe circa 1930-1945.

To jam, you basically broadcast a more powerful signal on the wave length you want to drown out.

I have seen that word sheeple used around here a lot. Does that refer to the millions of people who use the internet?

No. The term "sheeple" is a cross between people and sheep, in the sense that some people have a herd-like or flock-like mentality, and just dumbly follow everyone else without giving any thought to danger or getting "fleeced". Such people often make fun of those who are more aware and into preparedness, so there is a derogatory sense to the term.

Both people and sheeple alike use the internet!
