Pure ethanol has 76,100 Btu per gallon, compared to 114,000 Btu per gallon of gasoline. So ethanol is about 30% less energy dense.

Once you start talking ethanol / water blends the energy density probably falls off substantially as the amount of water is increased, but I haven't read any literature on that.

I hadn't read the 168 proof figure before, but it makes sense. The engine can tolerate about 15% water in the fuel. Maybe more with gas added.

If shtf, I frankly, will not risk being around anyone other than my wife and daughter. I dont want to help addicts and dont want to be anywhere around them. So no booze, dope, or nicotine as barter items. I will not risk letting anyone know of my presense, so I wont barter anything unless it was life or death. so i'm not stockpiling anything to trade. It would probably be something I'd found or grown and it would be done by dead drops, communicating with flags, graffiti, message arrows. Treachery and disease will be very high risks.

That is foolish, in my opinion. No one needs to know one item is from a stockpile.

First aid supplies are valuable. Items like crutches (could be used as a weapon in a pinch), Ace bandage type sports wraps for wrist, elbow, knee since you may not have access to medical care. I've used that stuff in the past six months for the first time in my life. Accidents happen.

They key to bartering is to meet at a neutral location. If somebody is asking for something specific and you have a stockpile, don't do something stupid and say something like "Gasoline? Oh hell yeah we have drilling rig and a refinery, buses, cars, everything you need to make it across the wasteland!" Instead, you DON'T have any gasoline, but for the right price you might be able to find some.

if it is SHTF, bartering wont be safe for months after probably even years, most people wont have anything to trade and will just have what they stand up in so any trading would be fruitless and probably dangerous even fatal if the other person is desperate enough.
