It is a deterrent against using smallpox as a bioweapon.
Let's hope they fired the guy who pulled the newer N-95's during the recent Flu pandemic, and left the older ones, then decided not to restock it. (happened around 2009-2015, in case anyone is interested.) The SNS, like any stockpile, is only as good as the people managing it.

any company that is trying to get government contracts is going to bribe politicians. looks like "emergent biosolutions" is the company that won this contract for providing the government with smallpox vaccine. they bribe politicians to help them get the contracts.

Nope. The contract to purchase smallpox vaccine was already in place when Emergent Biosolutions purchased Sanofi's smallpox vaccine. So I guess it was somebody else who did the bribing.
And don't forget, EBS also makes the DOD's anthrax vaccine.

well, its not like they bribe once and then stop, its an ongoing process.

i dont think the logical conclusion is to stop campaign contributions. the logical conclusion is to eliminate politicians and "non-profit" government entities and mandatory nation membership. move government to a choice for profit model.
but i guess if you want to just work within the current system, then yeah there shouldnt be campaign contributions or other forms of bribery. just stopping one isnt enough. everyone got a good look at another one (hunter biden) and democrats were blinded by their party support and repubicans only cared for the purpose of a single election. now everyone has moved on and nothing is done to fix the problem.

On Friday evening, in CDC & Texas Confirm Monkeypox In US Traveler ex Nigeria, we looked at the first confirmed cases of Monkeypox in the United States since the multi-state outbreak in 2003. While endemic in west and central Africa, in recent years we've seen a spate of exported cases arrive in the UK, Singapore, Israel, and this week the United States.
The UK is apparently still dealing with a limited household outbreak (see ECDC CDTR: 3rd Monkeypox Case In the UK), the 5th, 6th, and 7th case reported in the UK since 2018 (see here and here).
While the risk of seeing a community outbreak of Monkeypox in the United States is probably very low - last summer, in WHO: Modelling Human-to-Human Transmission of Monkeypox, we looked at a WHO assessment which cautioned `. . . . with declining immunity to orthopoxvirus species, monkeypox can pose an ever-increasing threat for health security.'
Routine vaccination against smallpox - which supposedly provides about 85% protection against Monkeypox - ended in the 1970s. Today more than half of the world's population is unvaccinated, and the level of protection remaining among those vaccinated 50+ years ago is highly suspect.
A 2016 study (see EID Journal:Extended H-2-H Transmission during a Monkeypox Outbreak) looked at a large 2013 outbreak of Monkeypox in the DRC and suggested that the virus's epidemiological characteristics may be changing (possibly due to the waning smallpox vaccine derived immunity in the community).
