Thanks guys we did build a box but need to insulate it and going to get something to set generator on instead of direct contact with asphalt ground. If we're not satisfied enough with that then we'll be looking into a small car muffler too. Bought it for Y2k ad fortunately never had to use it for an emergency but occassionally we run it to keep it loose.

DO NOT DO THIS!! You will ruin the engine due to increased exhaust restriction!!

As far as what to set the unit on .............
The only real workable choice here is mount the entire unit on a bed of springs. These spring units can be found at any heavy industrial machine dealer.

He is right. The exhaust system of any generator is designed to produce x amount of back pressure on the exhaust system. By installing a smaller muffler in the hope that it will silence the machine back pressure will be dramiticaly increased, typically increasing exhaust temp to the point of damageing the unit. I submit the noise is mechanical in nature and not exhaust. Generac's like most small gensets are high speed (1800rpm and above) which result in a high frequency noise/vibration very noticable and uncomfortable to the human ear....

Yes, Increasing the exhaust system may well have that effect but it will not help mechanical noise i.e. radiator cooling fans, combustion noise etc.

One point that the OP has never made very clear is.....just how quiet do they EXPECT a generator running at high speed to be?

If OP has any expectation that the unit will be a quiet as car then get ready for bitter disappointment since it simply is not practical nor desired to have a unit with an exhaust that choked back.

I suggest you talk with Generac. I had a new 14KW standby LP unit from them installed 6 months ago. Its fairly quiet and I've no issues with the noise level and my neighbors barely hear it. As noted by other posters, I wouldn't mess with the muffler.
