Costcos is the only store I know of that has an employee checking at the entrance for the Costco card for admittance, and an employee checking at the exit for customers leaving with their receipts...since most other stores don't do this, just wondering why Costco does this...seems it's a "waste of time/resources" to have two employees do this at every store?
There was a study done that the presence of these people deters theft. This is why Walmart and Best Buy has greeters as well. Best Buy checks receipts on the way out. Thieves are less likely to steal from a store that has people standing at the doors.
They've been doing it for decades. They do it since many people buy in bulk and the cashiers don't catch everything to scan. I know a person who works for Sams Club who caught a person trying to steal a flat screen TV sandwiched between mattresses. In retail all employees are taught the 10 ft rule. They are supposed to acknowledge every person they come in contact with in some way. Theives don't want to be noticed.

My local Best Buys typically don't check them on the way out- only for things such as televisions. I wouldn't shop there nearly as much if they checked them on everything.
This was discussed in length awhile back and it came down to
1. Theft Control (as mentoned here)
2. Customer Service (make sure you got what you paid for and didn;t leave something on the counter)
3. Make sure you don;t walk back in, pick up the same things and walk out with the same receipt. (makes sense)
4. Cause its a membership warehouse club with rules that you agreed to follow when you joined. (Duh factor)
Best Buy here only checks the receipt for things not in a bag.
I've always like the greeters personally, especially ones who seem to like their job.
