They took all the cash registers out at JC Penney! (credit cards, store)

Under the new management team at JC Penney they decided that the modern hip way of doing things is to eliminate the cash registers. Now if you want to buy something you have to track down a sales clerk and pay with a credit card (no cash). The sales people have mostly been laid off due to financial problems but the few you see are using something like an IPAD.
I walked around for ten minutes trying to find a sales person to check me out and had no luck. I put my pants down and left. No sale from me for struggling JC Penney!
I was at JCP this week.
There are registers - or rather iPads - at a centralized station, and there were two cashiers on duty. There also were several people on the floor working the stock.
AND I paid in cash.
I tried this a few months ago as my local store was a pilot for this program. When I was asked if I wanted a receipt, I had the choice of a paper copy or have it e-mailed to me. I said, "email it." When I got farther away from the centralized checkout I thought, "what if I get stopped, I don't have my phone with me." How could I prove that I had actually paid for those items.

What a joke!
Their recently fired CEO worked for Apple. The best thing they could have done was fired him IMO. I really hate what Penney's has become. Other than seeing some foot flops on sale for $1 a few weeks back, I don't even shop there anymore. Old Navy and Kohls has received more business from me.

I doubt it. I don't think they can legally refuse US currency.

There are no federal laws that require a retailer to accept US notes. The law just requires that they must accept payment based on US money. So they can require only credit cards or checks but they can't require it to be in Yens or Euros. I believe 15 states do have local state laws that require a retailer to accept cash.

Thanks for the clarification. I believe that is where I got the idea from.
I've never seen a retailer go down the tubes as badly as Penneys did. I never did a LOT of shopping there, but they had really good basic ladies tees and pants under the St. Johns Bay label. Last fall I went into the local Penneys to buy some long-sleeved tees and turtlenecks and the SJB brand was gone, replaced by a new "JCP" brand, which were made of really flimsy, thin fabric and sized so small that the XL barely fit me, and I usually take a medium in women's tops. I talked to the sales clerk and she said everyone was bemoaning the change.
I haven't been back since, and unless they really turn around, I think they're going to be burnt toast in no time.
