Does anyone miss the Hills department stores? They used to be popular in the Eastern states and had some cute things for good prices. I used to do some of my Christmas shopping there.
We had a Hills here when I first moved to Bristol, they were ok before they got rid of most of their loss prevention officers, the Christmas before they closed I remember the toy dept looked like it exploded and most everything had been ripped open, sad they went by the wayside as so many have and are.
What I couldn't figure out, though ... Why was it that, at every Hills store I'd ever been to, the parking lot was a total free-for-all? Cars going every which way, parked every which way ... What a zoo!
Back when I lived in Toledo Ohio we had one really close to where I lived. We used to go there all the time. When meijers expanded into our area it pretty much wiped them out. Now Walmart moved into their space and took out the kmart that was down road. It is sad. I enjoyed shopping at that store and it seemed like they had pretty good deals there too. Now that I think about it I really miss them too.
I worked there when I was just out of high school, before going to college. Luckily, I had a good manager, but working there during Christmas was nightmarish. I used to get many of my school clothes there. There also used to be an Ames store near where I lived, but I didn't like them as much as Hills. I agree that the Walmart chain probably helped put them out of business.
We had a Hill's here in Alabama. It was a very successful store, but it still closed, probably 20 years ago now. Management agreed that the store made money, but the entire company was closing down the stores far from the home office at the time. Back when watches first went digital, Hill's had a watch that showed a cannon shooting and played Dixie. Tacky, right? After thinking about it, I decided it was SO tacky that I had to have one. They were sold out! Said they couldn't keep 'em in...still wish I had bought it when I saw it!
i was born in youngstown, ohio...now in atlanta.....and the hills closed there in about 1995. never saw one here in the south, must have closed earlier down here.
In Brooklyn NY, We had EJ Korvettes and Robert Hall. Upstate NY we had Ames and Bradleys.
