They got rid of the $5 footlong, replaced it with $6 6 inch subs with a chips and drink and thought I wouldn't notice.
The problem is if I'm spending $5-6 already on not much food, I'm gonna spend another $2-3 to get either more quantity, or better quality. Enter Jimmy Johns or the local Chinese place, and Culvers as well.
I can get a large cheese pizza that comfortably feeds two for 13 dollars(and this is decent pizza from a local shop). Or I can get Mcdonalds or subway for $12. It's an easy choice.

Regardless of the price, Jimmy John's is just better, and when they opened across the street from Subway, we tried them and switched. I always found Subway's TV ads annoying, too, and have never seen Jimmy John's advertise.

Their constant ads about new sandwiches and promotions make them seem cheap and gimmicky to me. Try our new Avocado Buffalo Ranch Honey Mustard Chicken sandwich, now for a limited time! My Jimmy John's has had the same menu since I started going there seven years ago.
I do think a lot of it has to do with newer competitors.
Even though the food is different, I do see Chipotle as a direct competitor.
Their motto is 'Eat Fresh"..but sometimes you wonder how fresh the stuff really is.
Also I know they make a point of baking their bread in house..but the bread doesn't have much flavor, I feel.
I always liked the sandwiches better at Quiznos or Togos, but I believe Quiznos is in bad financial shape and a lot of stores have closed. Prices are higher though.
Jersey Mikes is another concept that seems to be growing too, their sandwiches are more expensive than subway but a lot better I think.

I am of the opinion that the meat and the cheese that they put on the bread also doesn't have much flavor!
It seems to me that, no matter which variety of Subway sandwich I order, they all taste pretty much the same--except for the dressing that I might have selected that day. Everything--bread, cheese, meat--at that place seems incredibly bland, IMHO.
I don't totally avoid Subway, but I think that I probably patronize their stores no more than 3 times a year, and only if nothing more appealing is available.
I much preferred quiznos. However the ones in my area were closed due to some kind of accounting fraud. We have a ton of small Italian restaurants that make a better sandwich than the chains.
